Gigi’s Southern Table

Restaurant branding for Gigi’s Southern Table

BRANDING        PACKAGING        LAYOUT        UX/UI        4 WEEKS        2022

The inspiration behind Gigi’s branding came from the era in which the name was popular (mid-century) as well as its meaning (earth-worker), therefore an earthy mid-century modern approach was taken.

Especially after the Covid-19 pandemic hit, “contactless” became the new “it” feature. So, I wanted to make sure that there was a form of contactless payment in the restaurant as well as an updated website for those wishing to take out.

Behind the Project

The Brain Dump

For me, every project starts with a mind map. It’s a way to research and jot down ideas to help create and solidify a concept. Based on research, the factors that stuck out to me were the time period in which the name “Gigi” was most popular (Mid-Century) as well as one of the meanings of the name (earth-worker), I decided I wanted to demonstrate these ideas through a modern twist of mid-century design and the usage of warm earth-toned colors and textures.

The Moodboard

The moodboard for this project consisted of warm-toned colors and earthy textures. Intending to sprinkle some mid-century modern qualities, I chose to take a closer look at some photographs of interior design. I took an interest in recurring patterns and textures on the walls and floors. I noticed there were everything seemed rather linear in some type of way. For example, the circles in one of the patterns are sharply cut in half creating very even and perfect semi-circles. On top of that, the circles are placed in a grid of squares bringing more of the linear repetition to the pattern.

The Logo

The logo, as many do, went through various iterations. I interpret the name Gigi as a very girly, free-flowing name, therefore the first eight thumbnails did not seem right. I attempted tying in the pattern for the project into the logo, but it made it feel too heavy and imbalanced which did not feel very “Gigi”. With that in mind, I chose to ditch the idea of filling in the “G” and keep the name light.
